🇰🇷 South Korea — Put It on the National Flag
The Taegeukgi features the yin-yang at its center, surrounded by the four trigrams: Qian (Heaven), Kun (Earth), Kan (Water), and Li (Fire).
It is the only national flag in the world built upon the symbols of the I Ching.
🇩🇪 Germany — Wrote It into Binary Code
Leibniz saw the diagram of 64 hexagrams and discovered that the solid and broken lines corresponded perfectly to 1 and 0.
His paper on binary arithmetic rewrote the foundational code of the entire information age.
🇯🇵 Japan — Embedded It into Institutions and Spirit
From the civil service exams of the Nara period, to the divination rituals of the Heian-era Bureau of Yin-Yang, to Panasonic's corporate motto "Endless generation and change is what is meant by Yi" —
In Japan, the I Ching is not a foreign classic; it is a locally functioning cog.
🇬🇧 United Kingdom — Sent It into Oxford's Lecture Halls
In 1876, James Legge became Oxford University's first professor of Chinese.
In 1882, he published the first reliable complete English translation of the I Ching at Oxford —
marking the moment this Chinese classic was recognized by Britain's highest academic institution as a "sacred text of humanity."
🇫🇷 France — Preserved It in the National Library
In 1701, French Jesuit Joachim Bouvet sent a 27-page letter from Beijing to Leibniz, enclosing the Fuxi 64-hexagram diagram.
That letter is still held today at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, catalog number Fonds français 17249 —
the founding document of European sinological study of the I Ching.
🇺🇸 United States — Invited It into Harvard Classrooms and Princeton's Book Series
Harvard professor Michael Puett's course on Chinese philosophy fills over 700 seats in Sanders Theatre, ranking among the top three most-enrolled non-technical courses at the university in recent years.
Princeton University Press placed the I Ching in its "Lives of Great Religious Books" series, alongside the Bible, the Quran, and the Bhagavad Gita —
it is the only Chinese book ever included in the collection.
